I always struggled to come up with a photo story I was really, truly into. My first stab at it consisted of 10 horrible images from Tom’s Tavern, a Boulder restaurant as they shut down. That gradually evolved, and while I was in Bali, I put together a multimedia piece based around cockfighting and gambling. I was (still am) quite proud of that, but it wasn’t quite what I wanted.
I started taking pictures of my mother when she moved up to Boulder into an apartment across the street from me, and I put a bunch of them together for a multimedia piece that means a lot to me.
It was interesting documenting a subject I was so close to. It made the editing process much more difficult, and I’ve had to have several pairs of eyes tear it apart and piece it back together.
Well worth it in the end, I think.

Denver Art Museum
I think someone stole the mummy from the King Tut Exhibit at the Denver Art Museum.
Either that, or it was the most anti-climactic display I’ve ever seen. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it, but I was definitely expecting to see the King himself. Apparently that wasn’t part of the bargain.
Here’s a frame I snapped in the European art display.

Gay Straight Alliance Drag Show
In the five years I’ve been at CU now, this is the first time I’ve been to the Drag Show. They did a fabulous job with it though, and it was a ton of fun to watch. I was helping out with video, so I didn’t really get to take too many pics, but here are a couple that I managed to grab that I liked.
And then here’s a cute picture of my mother, dressed up for the show.

Drag Show Promo video
Glitter. Fashion. Beauty. Glamour.
Drag.
I worked with classmates Morgaine Nassif and Sara Handing on a promortional video for the CU Gay Straight Alliance’s Drag show, happening Oct. 28th at 8:00 in the Glenn Miller Ballroom. I absolutely love how the video turned out, and for being a group project we worked together really well. Take a look!

Boulder in the Fall
I tend to get bored with Boulder visually. It feels like I’ve seen it all sometimes. I think I tend to think big picture too much. Because when I finally get out with my camera, I can end up spending hours in one small area, like the Evert Pierson Memorial Kids’ Fishing Ponds along Boulder Creek. Sure, everyone has shot this at some point, and I probably have a couple times too. But when the leaves are changing colors, and it’s a wonderful 75 degrees outside in the middle of October, it’s hard not to appreciate Boulder.
I can’t decide if I’m dreading leaving Boulder when I graduate, or if I can’t wait to get out of here.
If I leave, anyway.

Jackson, WY
Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to attend the Fall Photography at the Summit workshop hosted by Rich Clarkson and Associates, thanks to a generous scholarship from former Sports Illustrated writer Doug Looney. Jackson, WY is known for its beauty and wildlife. Bears, elk and moose can easily be seen from highways. The aspen and other deciduous trees turn brilliant colors of red and gold in the fall. Naturally, the majority of the workshop participants wanted to take advantage of the abundant beauty and wildlife of the area, waking up at the crack of dawn to catch the morning light.
Instead, I spent my time around dead animals.
Hunting is one of the primary parts of the tourism economy in Jackson, and is often overlooked in the pictures. Upon the suggestion of a staff photographer in the area, I sought out a wild game butchery business. While everyone else in the class displayed their images of bears out in the wild, I presented a picture of an employee handling a dead bear’s cloak, as they call them. The photo was received very well, and struck up a large amount of conversation. Too bad it’s a teensie bit out of focus. If it weren’t for that, it would definitely be going in the portfolio. But I still thought it would be worth sharing.

Brainard Lake
I am not a fan of landscape or nature photography. I generally try to avoid it, and don’t usually go out of my way to look at it. It’s never interested me, and maybe it’s because I’ve never thought I was good at it. Today though, walking to Brainard Lake above Ward, the trees were turning, and the air smelled amazing. Even better, the lighting was gorgeous. It was really good to get out of Boulder and into the mountains. It made me wonder why I don’t spend more time up there.
So here you go – my version of a nature photo. It was a splintered tree with the light hitting it perfectly. It looks like an alligator to me.

Louisville
Louisville has an amazing downtown atmosphere. The city put out decks for restaurants that wanted them, and everybody seems to know each other. It’s as chic as Boulder, with more of a small-town friendly feeling. Families were out walking, and older couples were out dining. The light was beautiful too, which is rare for this area. Here are a couple from that evening.

Great American Beer Festival
Last Friday, I was asked to go shoot the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. I’ve heard good things about the festival, but I realized once I was there that it’s probably a heck of a lot more fun if you can actually drink. The lights in the room were red. Not fun red, but “crikey this is going to be hard to get something publishable red.” The assignment was really vague, too, and I was asked to focus more on specific breweries than on the general scene.
I did manage to get this gem though…

Fourmile Canyon Fire
I spent all afternoon covering the Fourmile Canyon Fire in Boulder. I figured out pretty early on that Flagstaff Road was the best place to see the smoke, and eventually the fire. I’m glad I went. But now I’m really, really tired and probably smell really smokey.
